Odaawaa-Zaaga’iganiing: Lac Courte Oreilles

The Lac Courte Oreille Tribe is located in northern Wisconsin near Clam Lake. The Tribe protects Ma’iingan through its code of law on conservation:

“No member or non-member shall hunt, fish, trap or gather any of the following species: paddlefish, spoonbill catfish, wolverine, badger, flying squirrel, wolf, lynx, cougar, elk, moose, pine marten, homing pigeon or any wild bird, except those species whose harvest is specifically regulated pursuant to the provisions of this ordinance.”

“This image represents one of the seven stops along the migration journey of the Ojibwa people.  The Ojibwa people were looking for their final destination, where “the food grows on water” (wild rice) and an island shaped like a turtle, which is generally believed to be Madeline Island in Lake Superior.

“Original work can be found hanging at the Lac Courte Oreilles Community Library on the Lac Courte Oreilles reservation in northern Wisconsin.  Original is acrylic paint and size is three and one half feet by five feet.”
